Tō Mātou Kōrero: Our Story, Our History
St Albans Community Preschool
Tucked within the heart of Christchurch, our story begins in 1985 with a simple but powerful idea: that families in the St Albans and Mairehau community deserved a place where their children could belong, learn, and thrive.
What started as a conversation between the Christchurch City Council, local playgroups, and Plunket quickly grew into something special. An organising committee formed, a modest building on Thames Street was leased, and on 18 November 1985, our doors opened for the very first time. We were a small crèche then - just a few mornings a week - but already grounded in community, care, and connection.
Only months later, in 1986, a devastating electrical fire damaged much of the building. But even in those early days, the resilience of our community shone through. By October, we had reopened - stronger, more determined, and supported by those who believed in what we were building.
From there, we grew.
Through the late 1980s and 90s, our preschool evolved alongside the families we served. We added outdoor play spaces, built forts and cart tracks, upgraded facilities, and welcomed hundreds of children through our gates. The Beebos Toy Library once ran from our garage, laughter filled our playground, and each improvement reflected a shared commitment to giving children the very best start.
In 1994, we became St Albans Edu-Care Centre Inc., marking a new chapter of identity and purpose. Over the years, we continued to adapt - adding technology (our first digital camera was a big deal!), extending hours, and improving our environment for both children and kaiako.
Then came the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 - moments that shaped all of Christchurch. Like many, we were displaced. We relocated to Glenmoor School, then to the Shirley Rugby League Clubrooms, before finally returning home to Thames Street in 2013. It was a challenging time, but it reinforced something we already knew: we are more than a building. We are a community.
That same year, we embraced the name St Albans Community Preschool — a name that truly reflects who we are and who we exist for.
In recent years, we’ve continued to grow and evolve. A major renovation in 2018 transformed both our indoor and outdoor spaces, creating an environment that invites exploration, creativity, and confidence. We also refined our focus to better support children over two years old, ensuring our programme truly meets their developmental needs.
Today, we blend our strong history with modern practice. With the introduction of digital tools, families can stay connected to their child’s day in real time - from learning moments to care routines. Our hours reflect the realities of busy families, and ongoing grants and community support have allowed us to enhance our playgrounds, resources, and learning spaces.
In 2025, we celebrated a remarkable milestone - 40 years of community, learning, and belonging. Surrounded by past and present whānau, kaiako, and supporters, we reflected on how far we’ve come. From a small crèche to a thriving preschool, our journey has always been shaped by the people within it.
And that’s what makes us special.
We are not-for-profit. We are community-led. We are built on relationships, resilience, and a deep belief in the potential of every child.
When you walk through our gates, you’re not just joining a preschool - you’re becoming part of a story that has been growing for over four decades.
And we would love you to be part of what comes next.
